Ever-popular, Alan Barnes and Bruce Adams’ straight-ahead hard bop quintet has been performing for 28 years!

With a repertoire from the classic years of bop and an emphasis on accessibility and good humour, they will open this year’s Swansea International Jazz Festival with a conviction that jazz should swing.

Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist who has dominated the saxophone and clarinet section of the British jazz awards throughout the 1990s and beyond. He is often to be seen compering as well as performing at major jazz festivals.

He has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone. The list of his session and sideman work includes Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Michel LeGrande, Clare Teale, Westlife, Jools Holland and Jamie Cullum. He has toured and played residencies with such diverse and demanding figures as Ruby Braff, Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Ken Peplowski, Harry Allen and Conte Candoli.

Bruce Adams is one the jazz scene’s most dramatic and stimulating performers – a band room with the Glaswegian present is a happy and riotous place.

Bruce cut his musical teeth on solid commercial work – on cruise liners, in dance halls, music halls, and even worked in support of comedy legends like, Tony Hancock and Freddie Starr.

His spectacular range and power on the trumpet has been in demand and Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band.

The Swansea Jazz Club Trio are three vastly experienced jazz musicians that have provided the backing for 100’s of international artists at the club for over 20 years. Dave Cottle (piano), Alun Vaughan (bass) & Paul Smith (Drums).
