The Paxton Street tunnel is expected to re-open shortly following refurbishment works forming part of a Swansea Council project called Waterfront Connections.

New street lighting is also being introduced on the marina side of the tunnel and the area is being opened up with a wide, clear footpath for pedestrians.

The tunnel won’t form part of the cycle network. Cyclists will instead be directed from the West Way crossing point along to Bathurst Street where they can join the new shared-use path linking Dunvant Place with the promenade.

Signs asking cyclists to dismount will be installed on the south side of the tunnel.

Work already completed under the project includes the widening of the footway between the LC and west of the Civic Centre as well as a new footway linking Dunvant Place with the promenade, new surfacing and extended railings have also been installed around the Marina.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “We have an award-winning coastline within touching distance of our city centre but Oystermouth Road has formed a barrier between the two areas for too long.

“We’ve already seen a new crossing point introduced close to its junction with West Way, but the re-opening of the Paxton Street tunnel will give residents and visitors even better access between the shops and the Maritime Quarter in the near future.

“The Waterfront Connections scheme will also benefit traders both in the city centre and the marina area because it will encourage far more people to pass between them.”

Waterfront Connections is one of a number of projects being funded by the Welsh Government, the Wales European Funding Office and Swansea Council to improve the Swansea city centre experience for residents, businesses and visitors to the city.
