Multimedia installation from Wakelin Award winner Cinzia Mutigli, exploring sugar addiction and Post-Colonial conversations. Purchased in partnership with the Friends of the Glynn Vivian, the annual award is given to a Welsh artist, whose work is purchased for the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection. This year’s selector is Cardiff-based artist and curator, Anthony Shapland.

Cinzia Mutigli’s Sweet Wall, 2020, is a multi-dimensional film installation, interweaving stories about sugar and post-colonial identity. Jam and sugar are central to the installation. Set against a backdrop of wallpaper with a repeating motif, the film links together historic trauma of the transatlantic slave trade together with more personal narratives of addiction.
