Purple Flag Award

C 11th September 2015

Not only does Swansea Bay have fabulous award winning beaches and beautiful green spaces, but the city centre has also been recognised for its safe, diverse night life.

In February 2015 Swansea became the only city in Wales to be awarded the prestigious Purple Flag, a national accreditation scheme that recognises excellent management of city centres at night, which is backed by the government, police and business. Swansea is one of only a handful of places in the UK to hold the Purple, Blue and Green flags.

The Purple Flag status confirms Swansea as a vibrant place to visit at night time with clean and safe environments, great bars and clubs, a variety of arts and cultural attractions and excellent transport links.

Our famous Wind Street and the bars and clubs make it a destination for many young people, from all over south Wales. But did you know about all the other things you can do on an evening out in Swansea? There’s theatre, live music of all kinds, cinemas, poetry and literature, great restaurants, dance performances and classes, bowling, laserzone, skateboarding, sporting activities … truly something for everyone, all in the city centre!

Take a look at our page on Things To Do in Swansea Bay to find out more about our venues, or click here for details on upcoming events.

What is Purple Flag?

The flag is the indicator of where to go for a good night out.

Purple Flag is the “gold standard” for town centres at night, it aims to raise standards and improve the quality of our towns and cities between the hours of 5pm and 5am. It is an accreditation scheme based on a set of standards and towns and cities that meet the standards can fly the flag. It was launched in October 2009 and 51 towns in the UK held Purple Flags in 2014, none in South Wales.
